Overview

Changsha is the capital city of province Hunan, in south-central China, located on

the lower reaches of Xiang River, a branch of the Yangtze River. Its municipality

covers an area of 11,800 square kilometers with a population of 7.3 million.

Changsha experiences a humid subtropical climate with annual average temperature

of 17.0 °C (62.6 °F), with a mean of 4.6 °C (40.3 °F) in January and 29.0 °C

(84.2 °F) in July. Average annual precipitation is 1,330 millimeters (52 in)

and the yearly frost-free period is 275 days. The four seasons are distinct.

Summers are long and hot with heavy rainfall, and autumn is comfortable with

abundant sunlight. Winter is comparatively dry (but somewhat damp and overcast)

and rather brief, but cold snaps occur with temperatures occasionally dropping

 below freezing.

Housing

“Expat standard” accommodation in Changsha is relatively limited due to the

relatively slow pace of city development and small number of foreign invested

enterprises to date. There are a number of western style apartment and villa

estates and others in the pipeline, but in general the quality and management

of these properties cannot compare with similar estates in the more developed

eastern regions of China. Most of expatriates live from the north part to the

south part of Yuelu Mountain. (see Appendix for some popular compounds)

Medical Care

Xiangya Hospital  (http://www.xiangya.com.cn/ (Chinese)) is one of the earliest

hospitals of Western medicine established by Yale-China association, which has

extensive in-patient and outpatient facilities (including a Pediatrics department).

Hunan Want want hospital provides medical and emergency assistance services .They

offer bilingual services and they claims to offer the best possible healthcare

in the local region.

Education

located on 8, Dongyi Road, Xingsha. CWA started as a Primary/Elementary School for

children in Grades 1-5 and now opens Early Years section for children aged 3-5.

In years to come, CWA intends to eventually become a full international school and

offer classes up to Grade 12.For further information, please visit their

Transportation

Bus

Public bus and nearly one thousand minibuses serve all parts of the city and its

suburbs. Fares for ordinary buses are RMB 1 and for those with air conditioning

 are RMB 2.

Taxi

Compared with other big cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou, it is cheaper to hire

a taxi in Changsha. Daytime base fare is RMB 8 for the first 2 km then RMB 2.0

for each additional km. Base fare at night (22:00-5:30) is RMB 10 for the first

2 km then RMB 2.4 for each additional km.If the speed is less than 12km/h, RMB 1

 every 2 minutes extra.

Ferry

Changsha Port is located at the cross of Zhongshan Road and Yanjiang Avenue and

has an excellent geographical position being on the bank of Hsiang.  Along Hsiang,

through Dongting Lake, entering Yangtze River, then Changsha Port can reach to sea.

The natural coastline of the whole port is 95 km.

Changsha Huanghua International Airport

The airport is a regional hub for China Southern Airlines that serves major cities

in China, including Hong Kong. Other major airlines also provide daily service

between Changsha and other domestic and international destinations. The airport

provides direct flights to 45 major cities such asFrankfurt, LA,Hong Kong,

Bangkok, Seoul, Pusan, Osaka etc.

Shopping & Recreation

The highest concentration of modern shops can be found in Wanda Plaza near

Xiang River, which is brimming with department stores, specialty shops,

supermarkets and hotels. Other shopping districts are located at Wuyi Road,

Huaxing Nan Road Walking Street, which features regular acrobatic shows in

addition to its restaurants and boutiques. Supermarkets, consumer electronics and

clothing stores can be found in southern Changsha's Dongtang Shopping District.

Walking Street (BUXINGJIE)

Pretty much the city centre, with HuangXing Statue (a great meeting point, although

this has been temporarily removed due to works) is a long pedestrianised shopping

area, with ID Mall nearby, food street PoziJie, a Walmart and cinema complex (with

lots of small snack stalls outside), bars, clubs and a central stage area to keep

the shoppers entertained. You should make time to spend a whole day strolling

this area, shopping, trying out snacks as well as the more hidden backstreets.

Walking Street is just a few blocks in from the riverside which is also host to

events, buskers, Chinese opera, dancing and, during the summer months, a grand

firework display every Saturday night at 8:30pm.

The nearest subway station is Wuyi Square. Just head one block south of the

station to JieFang Xilu (for the main bar and club street in Changsha) to

enter this busy commercial area.

Changsha's nightlife is varied and vibrant. Hawkers selling snacks and knickknacks

off the back of small carts fight for space with cars and pedestrians in the busy

streets around the city's bars and KTVs, among which most popular line is

Jiefang Xi Road. Theatres such as the Hunan Theater, the Tianhan Grand Theater and

the Hunan Xiang Opera Theater provide a variety of performing arts including the

local Geju Opera, Zaji, a form of acrobatics and storytelling using shadow puppets

in a style known as Piying Xi. Today, most of these entertainment places present

dynamic entertaining plays and performances that feature a blend of the

traditional elements with more modern trends.

There are numerous parks dotting Changsha including the Memorial Park for National

Heroes, Sea World, the Moon Lake Park and Yuelushan Park. These parks not only

show Changsha in all its natural beauty, but they also provide for a variety of

fun attractions and rides.

Culture and Language

In recent years, Changsha has become an important creative center for TV and

entertainment arts, with its many TV stations producing some of the most popular

programs in China, including ,Where is Daddy, Super Girl, a Chinese female version

of the UK Pop Idol or American Idol that is the most watched program ever to air

on Chinese TV. These programs have also brought a new entertainment industry,

including singing bars, dance clubs, theater shows, as well as related businesses

like hair salons, fashion stores and hot spicy snacks at night, especially

 in the summer time.

Changsha dialect is a dialect of Xiang Chinese, which is one of the Sinitic

languages.

It is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin, the official language of China.

Scenic Area

Yuelu Mountain

Yuelu-Mountain-2_M.jpg

Yuelu Mountain overlooks the city and is a favourite walking and exercise place for

the locals. Changsharen sometimes walk to the top, allow for at least 30 minutes,

take photos of the city below and explore some of the paths and lakes that litter

 the mountain side.

Entrance is free and there are some amusements at the top including a temple and

cable car facility. This is a great way to cool down in those humid summer months.

Orange Island

Changsha City.jpg

Orange Island, so called because Changsha produces a plentiful supply of oranges

(some green, not so orange!), sits as a perfectly long strip of land in the Xiang

Jiang (river). The XiangJiang is said to be protected by two Goddesses who committed

suicide in the river following the death of their mystical husband/ruler (shun).

Orange Island is now a regular fixture for foreigners and Chinese alike and the

island's management team is pushing to stage an increase in the number of activities

 throughout the year.

These events aside, the Island is now connected with a subway station, of the same

name (JuZiZhou) and has  temple complex at the closer northern end and a huge

Chairman Mao statue/bust at the far southern end. The island is mainly used as a

place to stroll, take photos along the southern section, which has an array of

pagodas and garden zones and other chill out activities.

You may need to take some water if you plan to visit the bust in summer as shops

are scarce but there is an island cart service.

The island is also host to some major music concerts throughout the year, most

notably the Orange Island music festival (Sept).

City Riverside Promenade

On the East side of the river, a lengthy path takes one from the southern end of

Changsha to Kaifu district in the north. The path, with sculptures, small pagodas,

locals dancing, temple structures and a variety of buskers and street performers

 is a great experience.

In summer time, every Saturday night at either 8 or 8:30pm (varies) thousands line

the riverside to take in spectacular fireworks, set off from Orange Island

(opposite), which are mostly produced in the nearby town of Liuyang (home of the

firework). Locals also light and send off paper lanterns and engage in other social,

pleasant activities.

There is a wider, and more spacious path that runs along the West side of the river

too, although with far less active flare but an equally good vantage point for the

firework displays

Summary

Changsha has rich historical heritages including old wall remains, tomb sites,

religious temples and buildings. It is also a metropolitan city acting as a major

interior port and a commercial and industrial center. In addition, the city was

home to Chairman Mao Zedong and other revolutionary leaders including Liu Shaoqi,

Huyaobang and former Chinese prime minister, Zhu Rongji. Therefore, it is a good

place to learn more about China's recent history.
