1.General introduction

Wuhan's history dates back 3,500 years. It was once the center of the ancient

State of Chu, and has always been an important spot on the mighty Yangtze River.

From Wuhan, merchants followed the great river and extensive water networks to

expand their businesses throughout the entire region.

图片2.png

Location & population

Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province and is the most populous city in the

Central China. It has a population of almost 10 million people.

图片3.png

Climate

Wuhan's climate is humid subtropical with abundant rainfall and four

distinctive seasons. Wuhan is known for its oppressively humid summers, when

dewpoints can often reach 26 °C or more. Because of its hot summer weather,

Wuhan is commonly known as one of the Three Furnaces of China, along with

Nanjing and Chongqing. Spring and autumn are generally mild, while winter is

cool with occasional snow.

Economy & industry

Wuhan, a National Historic City, is the capital of Hubei Province, also

affectionately dubbed the "city on rivers" and is the largest city in central

China. The mighty Yangtze River, the third longest river in the world,

intersects its largest branch, the Hanshui River at Wuhan and divides the

city into three distinct areas called Hankou, Hanyang, and Wuchang.

From the late 1990's on, Wuhan has enjoyed double-digit annual economic growth;

an incredible record lasting 16 consecutive years, with no sign of abatement.

The city was proclaimed to be the "Chinese economic and geographical center" by

a panel of national economists because it sits smack-dab in the center of and

almost exactly 1000 km distant from each of the four largest cities in the

country and consistently ranks among the top cities in China in terms of

competitive advantages and quality of life.In 2006, Wuhan's GDP reached 259

billion RMB, accounting for 35% of the GDP in the Province of Hubei and ranking

16th among all cities nationwide. GDP per capita sits at 29,890 RMB, roughly

equal to US$3,790. In 2006, total fixed capital investment reached 132.53

billion RMB,up by 26.1% over the previous year.

2.Transportation

Bus

The normal price is 1 RMB, air-conditioned 2 RMB. You can put the money in

the box next to the driver or purchase Bus IC card from all McDonalds in town.

Bus no. 401 and 402 lines are the one-day city tour lines, reaching all the

scenic spots of Wuhan.

Taxi

Taxis in Wuhan are fairly inexpensive. Standard taxi rates are: 6 RMB for 2km,

then 1.40 RMB for each additional km up to 7km and 2 RMB for each km after that.

More and more new taxis can be found and most taxis are Citroen, manufactured

from the local Joint Venture in Wuhan. Nowadays all taxis have a

receipt-printing meter. Taxis will change shift at 6 pm so it is very hard to

find a taxi between 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm.

Light Rail

Light rail has been in operation since the summer of 2004,from Jiangan

district to Dongxihu district. The ticket price is 1.5 RMB to 5 RMB.

Air

The airport is located in the north of Wuhan and can be reached by the Airport

Expressway.  Toll fee for a normal vehicle is 15 RMB. There are daily flights

to over 35 locations in China and to Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Thailand.

Ferry

There are 18 ferry routes in the city, of which there are three fast line

routes. There is also a sightseeing route on Yangtze river. You can take the

ferry in different ferry docks (Zhonghua road in Wuhang and WuhanGuan in Hankou).

Shopping

1) World City Optical Valley Walking Street 武汉光谷步行街

A whopping 1, 350 metres in length, this is one of the longest commercial

walking streets in the world! Like most shopping streets, it offers a wide

range of shops, restaurants, and local snacking stalls. But, one thing unique

about the World City Optical Valley Walking Street is its architecture—the

whole street is modelled after Spain and rustic England, although, currently

only the Spanish style street has been completed.Walking amongst the coble

lanes, a tourist might actually feel as if they've been transported away from

this busy, modern Chinese city—that is if you can ignore all the Chinese

people hustling past you, and all the Chinese shops. The street is full of Dr.

Who-style phone booths (although they have been painted yellow rather than the

traditional red). The Optical Valley Walking Street has many beautiful fountains,

an underground shopping area (still being built, but some parts are open), and

lots of places to take pictures. One of my favourite locales has these

incredible-looking statues of Don Quixote and Pancho Villa. Also, at certain

times, visitors can enjoy fashion shows, concerts, and other outdoor events.

Last month this street was one of the locations for Wuhan's International Beer

Festival.Another plus is its location. The World City Optical Valley Walking

Street is surrounded by other major shopping centres, such as the Guangu

Shopping Centre. After you are finished enjoying this street, you can easily go

to Carrefour, many foreign restaurants (Japanese, Korean, Western) or even watch

a movie at the international movie house, which shows both Chinese and foreign

films. There is a lot to see and do at the World City Optical Valley Walking

Street, and should you be visiting Wuhan, you should plan to spend a few hours

here exploring its unique Spanish charms.

2) Chu River Han Street 楚河汉街开街

The latest attraction to Wuhan is the 50 Billion RMB "Chu River Han Street"

project developed by the Wanda Group. It is 1, 500 metres long and is built

along the Chu River and Sand Lake. This massive undertaking will one day house

nearly 200 national and international "high class" shops, as well as a

multitude of restaurants and various entertainment outlets. As of now, 126

shops have been opened. Wanda Group is also working hard to preserve the natural

environment of the area. It has planned a few ecological projects as well as

some cultural exhibition centres, so tourists can both enjoy the elegant shops,

as well as marvel at the beautifully conserved Hubei waterways and learn about

parts of the Chu culture. This project officially opened during the past

National Holiday, and was immediately overrun by curious locals and tourists.

Not even the cold drizzle of Wuhan's autumn weather could prevent crowds from

gathering for the grand opening. Destined to become a major tourist attraction

in Wuhan, the Chu River Han Street is a shopping street not to be missed. Be

warned, the place is packed on the weekends so plan accordingly.

3) Hubuxiang Snack Street 户部巷小吃一条街

For those who prefer a little bit of history with their shopping experience,

head over to Hubuxiang, which is over 400 years old. Though considerably

shorter than the above-mentioned streets—stretching a meagre 150 metres—

that doesn't mean that it lacks any of the charm or character of these

larger streets. Why should you venture here? Short answer: food. This is the

famous Wuhan Breakfast Street, which has more than 30 kinds of snacks to

sample. The place is packed wall to wall with people, but the delicious foods

more than make up for it. Not only does the food taste great, but the locals

are very friendly and the prices are reasonable too! I had a bowl of gruel

with fried dough sticks for 3 RMB. I was also introduced to the delicious

"Chinese Breakfast Burger" here (egg, pork and vegetables). If you want to

enjoy some local traditions and flavours of the Wuhan people, then this place

should definitely be on your "must visit" list. Wake up early, and be ready to

eat until you stomach bursts.

4) Jiqing Jie 吉庆街

"If you go to Jiqing Jie, you'll really understand Wuhan. Anyone who doesn't

go there is the same as someone who has never been to Wuhan." This famous Wuhan

local saying clearly states their affection for this famous street. Where as

the first two are famous for shopping and setting all sorts of world records,

Jiqing Jie is only concerned with filling your stomach with great food in a

charming, crazy atmosphere. In the evening, hundreds of food stands appear on

the street to provide people with popular snacks and dishes at very affordable

prices. A small sample of what you might find are peppery fried snails, steamed

lobsters and crabs (of the fresh water variety), spicy shrimp balls, various

soups and dumplings and probably the most famous snack in Wuhan—and one not to

be missed—duck necks. People travel here from all over China just to enjoy the

food offered at Jiqing Jie. Besides the delicious foods, the great atmosphere

also makes this place worth a visit. While enjoying your meal outside, folk

musicians and artist will travel table to table perform songs of their play

lists. If you refuse, don't worry, they will stay play for you anyway, and

then charge you for their services, so you might as well play along and pick

a song you like.

Nightlife

1) Prison Bar (Folk Hand Music Bar)

This might be the first bar on my list, but it’s not the best. In fact,

if I were to be completely honest with you, this place is a dive. It’s

small, often overcrowded and the bathrooms might be the gateway to Hell.

This might not come to anyone’ surprise when you consider the owner is the

drummer for an underground metal band in Wuhan. With that in mind, the interior

of the place sort of mashes perfectly with the attitude of metal music being

loud, drunk and fun.

This is a free-for-all establishment, a mosh pit disguised as a greasy, dirty

bar. Inside you’ll find the typical beers commonly found in China starting at

around 5 RMB, harder spirits for those of you wanting to blitzkerg your mind

into happy oblivion, and they even offer absinthe. I drank absinthe once at

university and let me tell you something people, its awesome. It taste great,

goes down smooth, and knocks (while it rocks) your socks off.

The typical clientele of the Prison bar is mostly composed of foreigners.

Expats from across the globe converge here to swap stories, buy underground

Chinese punk albums, and eat BBQ. Sometimes there are live acts, both local

and from overseas. Sometimes bands performing atVOX will venture here afterwards,

so fans can have the chance to sit down with them and share a drink. In fact one

of the establishment’s founders, Wu Wei, mentioned in an interview, “I think

the bar is better, because when the bands play in VOX after the show they have

no place to go—just hang around on the street.”

So if you’re sick of VOX and can’t stand listening to anymore dance music or

just wish to try a new place, why not visit Prison Bar.

2) Blue Sky Cafe 蓝色天空咖啡

图片12.png

To most expats living in the Wuhan area, the Blue Sky Cafe hardly needs an

introduction. It’s famous. And there’s good reason for that too.

First, the environment is great. During the day it offers all kinds of Western

style foods from things like steaks, Mexican fajitas and even Turkish

shawarmasheds. In order to find out just how great their steaks were, I took

my buddy from Australia there for dinner. Afterwards, as he cleaned the juice

from his lips, I asked him how it was. His response, “Well let me give you

the dinkie-die on the Blue Sky’s steak, mate. Its bonzor! I like to av-a-go of

one with a nice cold grog, but if you don’t like it don’t whinge to me.” So

there you go.

During the day they also offer special fish dishes and imported goose and wines

from France. Their deserts are pretty nice too…and should you go I highly

recommend their pancakes a la Francaise. Though the food is great and the

atmosphere of both of their locations is clean, quiet and excellent, it can

be pricy. Just for dinner and a few drinks, expect to pay 100 to 200 RMB.

But if a night out on the town doesn’t come with any money restrictions,

treat yourself. Afterwards, stick around, because at night the Blue Sky Cafe

becomes one of the hottest joints in the Wuhan area.

Foreigners arrive here in droves once the sun sets, sort of like beer craving

vampires. The music on any given night might be blues to pop to ear blasting

house beats, served up every Friday—their Rave Night.

In addition to that, happy hour is from 24:00 to 01:00 and they have a wonderful

offer—buy one, get one free. This is my favourite bit. I’m a nut for Guinness

and this deal is like a small blessing as I buy three, but get six lovely bottles.

I wish Guinness was on tap, but I’ll take it anyway I can get it.

Blue Sky Cafe is also a great place to go for New Years. The place is packed

with people and everyone is having a fantastic time—dancing, drinking and

puking on each other’s shoes in the toilet. But its all gravy, baby, and

everyone goes home happy. One suggestion, get their early most evenings,

because seats are limited and arriving late means you’ll spend most of the

 night standing.

3) Helen’s Cafe

图片13.png

Another choice for you to visit in Wuhan is a lovely little chain gang offering.

I know there are a lot of fun little pubs off the beaten track and some of them

might even be better, cheaper and have some of the best go-go dancers in all the

lands—but there’s just something safe about chains.

This is one started in Beijing, but don’t let the decorations or the English

name fool you; this place is 100% Chinese. When I first visited, I thought it

was from Holland or something…I mean they wear wooden shoes!

In fact, Helen’s is not only a great place to enjoy a drink or meal; it's a

great place to learn more about one of China’s rarest minorities: the Tujia.

Everything inside Helen’s is created by hand. Even the trees used as decorations

are picked by the people for their natural beauty. Walking inside Helen’s is

like stepping into a museum that offers beer.

What makes this place a must-visit isn’t the food or the drinks. It's the

people. Most of the expats I’ve spoken to about Helen’s make interesting

parallels with this bar and a famous one back in the States—where everyone

seems to know your name? Ring any bells? For those of you who don’t get the

reference, it’s “Cheers.” At Helen’s, the staff are warm and will, in time,

become more than just a simple waitress or bartender. They will become your

 friend.

So there you have it. Those are the three main bars I recommended you check out in Wuhan. Should you have another place you love to hit when needing a drink post it below so other expats in Wuhan know where they can go for some grub, fun and a mean pint of golden goodness.
