1. General introduction
Yancheng, referring to "Salt City" in Mandarin, is a city with a history of 2,100 years.
Situated on the north bank of Yangtze River, the city was given the name referring to
its sea salt production and salt harvest fields, tracking back to 119 B.C.
Location & population
Yancheng is situated in the middle of Plain area of northern Jiangsu Province. It is near
to Yellow Sea in the east, near to Huaian and Yangzhou cities in the west, near to
Nantong city in the south. It borders on Taizhou city and Lianyungang city is its neighbor.
In 1983, it became the prefecture-level city of Jiangsu Province. It directly administrates
two county-level cities and five counties. Yancheng city has two districts and a development
zone, and the total area of the city is 1696 square kilometers. It has the city having the
largest area and second largest population. This city generally is famous for salt. It has a
long-standing history.
Lying along the China Yellow Sea, Yancheng has the longest coastal line in Jiangsu, near
600 km in length. It is the largest city in this province in terms of land size, 16,920 square
kilometer. The city's population is 8 million.
Climate
Located at the transitional zone of north subtropical zone and warm temperature zone,
Yancheng’s climate can be divided into two parts with the boundary of Subei Main
Irrigation Canal. The south of the canal is under the influence of north subtropical zone
and the north of that is under the influence of south warm temperature zone. The yearly
average temperature is between 14.6℃ and 15.9℃ and the yearly average rainfall volume
is between 1080.7mm and 1307.7mm.
Economy & industry
Yancheng's economy used to rely heavily on its agricultural industry and many of its
agricultural products were well-known in China. Fishing is another traditional sector
and provides thousands of job and income to the local residents. The recent addition
of automobile industry, with investments by a joint venture from the multinational auto
giant, Kia Motors, and the local company, Yueda Corporation, has significantly enhanced
the city's financial capability.
With its booming economy, environment contamination and air pollution could be the
next focus. Yancheng has spent substantial funds over years in protecting its eco-system
and stiff policies have been set up to monitor potential polluters.
2. Transportation
Railway
Yancheng railway station was opened on February 3, 2007 and gave the city an
alternative meaning for its transportation. But the trains are relatively slow. The high
speed train traits are still under construction.
Air
Yancheng Nanyang Airport has opened the flight routes from Yancheng to Beijing,
Guangzhou, Wenzhou as well as Seoul Korea and it is the second city which opened
the flight routes to international cities in Jiangsu Province. Yancheng Nanyang Airport
is only 8.3 kilometers away from the center of the city and passengers may take No.15
city bus to get to the airport. If passengers prefer to take taxi from the airport to the
downtown area, it charges about CNY30.

Nightlife
Pulsating with energy, glitz and glamour, the nightlife in Yancheng is an expedition
into the heartland of clubs and party hot spots. The Yancheng boasts of a wide array
of bars, pubs, clubs and discotheques. Feel like dancing the night away? Dance till dawn!
The nightlife in Yancheng is dominated by dance clubs and lounges. Many of the clubs
have live bands performing popular international songs! But nightlife in Yancheng is not
all about partying; you can also go to a theater or enjoy a movie at a cinema hall. The
options that the nightlife in Yancheng present is numerous – enjoy them!
Alternative for places with little or no nightlife : There’s not much to do at night in
some part of Yancheng. Nightlife there mainly consists of a few small bars. You can
go for a drink or two at the bars and enjoy a good snack. After a good tiring day of
activities, nightlife mainly consists of sleeping comfortably in your bed!
Cuisine
Taking Huaiyang cuisine in Su cuisine as its main body, Yancheng cuisine is
stressing on material choice, professional in soup boiling. Local delicacies include
Dongtai Fish Soup Noodles, Jianhu Lotus Root Powder Balls, Braised Fish Skin,
Yancheng Qiyuan Crab Yuk Bun, Fried Shrimps in Soy, Stewing Mullet, and Weever
with four Gills, which was the imperial tribute before.
Funing Great Cake
This local food, dubbed Jade-belt Cake, is specifically prepared for Chinese New Year,
which has a history of 2,000 years. Its ingredients consists of stick rice, sugar, vegetable
oil and preserved fruits.
It is served during the Chinese Lunar New Year.
Tang Ma Hua
This is one of the most famous food items in Yancheng. Sugar fried dough twist, Tang
Ma Hua in Chinese, provides joyful delights.

Attractions
Yancheng has the unique resources of ecological tourism. In total, currently there are
more than 40 attractions or scenic spots are opened to the public. Among them, there
are 15 province-level cultural and historical protection sites, one province-level scenic
spot, and two national natural reserves. Many famous sites such as Yongningchansi
temple established in the Tang Dynasty. Shi Naian former residence of the Ming
Dynasty, the former residence of Song Cao, a famous calligraphist in the late Ming
Dynasty, Kuzhi peony garden, red-crowned crane and elk natural reserves are the
members of UN and China’s human and ecosphere protection system. They have
been the widely comprehensive ecological tourism zone.
The east part of city is the largest coast-style marsh in the west side of the Pacific
Ocean and side of Asian continent. It has been listed into the world important wetland
protection area. At present, Yancheng marsh ecological park of China is under
construction for establishing the oriental marsh center. In the marsh center there
was a first natural protection zone in the world for elk protection and nation-level
rare animal protection zone. In Dafeng wild elk protection zone currently more than
600 elks are raised. The total amount of the wild animals, reproduction rate and elk
livability are ranked firstly in the world. In the reserve, there are 12 kinds of rare animals
under the national protection, and 67 kinds of second-class protected animals. Each year
in winter there are roughly 1,200 red-crowned cranes live here. Yancheng is also the origin
or cradle of Hui Opera, traditionally called Village of Huai Opera. This is good city for people
to enjoy the eco-tour. In modern times, it is the urban forests for people to come back to
live in nature and close with animals.
