1. General introduction

As one of China’s first fourteen coastal cities permitted to open to international

trade and economy, Nantong has a national reputation of "the First Window on the

Yangtze River" and is one of the national tourist centres. The city is listed on

the China's Top 100 Counties (county-level cities) for its comprehensive strength

in economy. With the completion of the Sutong (Suzhou-Nantong) Yangtze River Bridge

in April 2008, the city is becoming the best city for its economic growth and

foreign investments in the Yangtze Delta Economic Zone.

Location & Population

Standing on the Yangtze River Delta, Nantong is in the central part of Jiangsu Province.

The ports of China's coastal area can be reached through its estuary to the sea.

Proceeding northward along the Yangtze River, the city can connect the thoroughfares

with cities in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan and Sichuan provinces.

The Hao River, known as the Emerald Necklace of Nantong, surrounds the city with a

total

length of 15 km, where most city scenery lines. Nantong covers an area of 8544 square

kilometers with a population of more than 7.7 million.

Climate
Enjoying a subtropical and warm temperate monsoon climate, the area has relatively

moderate and favourable weather with enough sunshine and abundant rainfall.

Its average temperature of a year is about 15C (59F). Monthly daily average

temperatures range from 3.1 °C (37.6 °F) in January to 27.2 °C (81.0 °F)

in July, and the annual mean is 15.33 °C (59.6 °F). With the plum rain in June

and early July comes the rainiest part of the year.

When to Go: Spring is the most favourable season to pay a visit, for the weather

is neither hot nor cold. The water, garden and mountain landscape make the city

in spring the most charming.

?Economy & Industry
Nantong was historically known as an agricultural area and a traditional site

for salt-making. Its principal agricultural products include cotton, rice, wheat,

fishing, fruit, and more. Currently, the city is making efforts to upgrade its

farming sectors and increase production of organic foods.

Nantong is one of the 14 port cities opened to foreign investment projects under

China's current policies of modernization. Nantong was traditionally an industrial

city, especially around the turn of the 20th century, specializing in salt and

cotton textile production. Today’s industrial corporations have made Nantong

into an industrial hub since it opened its door to the outside world in the

1990s. With its excellent geographic location and the completion of two Yangtze

River bridges, the prefecture is attracting more investment funding nationwide.

2. Transportation

Air

Nantong Xingdong Airport, located in the town of Xingdong in Tongzhou District,

9.8 kilometers northeast of city center, serves Nantong and its neighboring areas.

towards serving international flights.

The Nanjing-Qidong (Ninjing-Qidong Ningqi) and Xinyi-Cahngxing (Xichang) Railways

intersect at Hai’an in the northwestern part of Nantong Prefecture.
Plans also exist for a cross-river connection from Nantong to the Shanghai

metropolitan area (the Shanghai–Nantong Railway). It will connect to the

Hospitals
Contrary to the beliefs of many Westerners, the medical and dental care available

in Nantong typically meets all international standards. Westerners typically utilize

the services offered and provided by Nantong University Hospital - Affiliated Hospital

of Nantong University, which has its own international medical school attached to it,

and Rich Hospital, a private hospital in Nantong. Both hospitals provide all

traditional and major medical services from general medical to emergency and trauma

care to specialized practices such as, but not limited to, ophthalmology, cardiac

and thoracic care, dentistry, internal medicine, orthopedic, gynecology and oncology.

All total, Nantong has over 17 hospitals, many of them specialized hospitals. The

cost of medical and dental care in Nantong is much cheaper than in larger Chinese

cities and of course similar services in Western countries. Most hospitals and

dental clinics do not accept health insurance but instead require cash payments to

be made in advance of any treatments or tests.

Thai and other Western styles of cooking and preparation.

A single meal can range in price from 20 RMB on up to 200 RMB on average. The

Asian style restaurants - Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai - are typically

community type meals where everyone in your party will share everything as opposed

to individual meals. This of course does not mean that you cannot make a special

request for a single "set meal" in those restaurants.

Meals range from 20 RMB to 200 RMB per person on average. While Nantong offers

traditional "sit down" restaurants, take away food is also available at restaurants

like KFC, McDonalds, Pappa John's, Pizza Hut, and local varieties of "fast food"

ensures that you will not starve while you are here.
