Nightlife
Voted the happiest city in China by Oriental Outlook Magazine several years running,

Hangzhou is China's leisure capital. Hangzhou nightlife is both diverse and centralized,

so it’s easy to bar hop until you find the perfect spot for you.

The Hangzhou nightlife is an active one and visitors will find that they can get a good

taste of the local culture by venturing out at night to the bars and clubs and mingling with

the people who live in the area.  The nightlife tends to be more populated with the younger

Hangzhou crowd but there are plenty of people of most ages out throughout the night.

A good place for starting out is Hong Feng Jiu Ba, a place which offers something

comparable to a western happy hour.  From there, travelers who want to go bar hopping

should check out Nanshan Road which is where a good portion of the local bars are situated.

Travelers who are more interested in the club scene will want to go to Club Max, LA Disco

or G Plus.  This is where the dancing takes place and the music keeps going throughout the

night.  Many locals frequent these clubs so it is easy to meet people if you are outgoing, but

appropriate, in your approach.

Travelers who are more interested in meeting other visitors than in mingling with the locals

will want to check out the bars in the local hotels.  Another good option is to go to the

Paradise Rock bar.

Cuisine

东坡肉.jpg

Hangzhou cuisine is currently one of the most popular and fashionable styles of

cooking throughout China and especially in neighboring Shanghai. A wealth of

"Hangzhou" inspired restaurants have shot up throughout the country and the cuisine

from this city has been elevated to a superior status.
Hangzhou cooking is closely related to the local culture and characterized by natural

flavor, beautiful presentation and a light and palatable taste. Dishes and pastries which

would have once been served on pleasure boats sailing up and down the lake remain

the main staple of the Hangzhou diet and recipes here usually contain a great deal of

seafood including fish, shrimp, crab and oyster.
Any dining experience in Hangzhou should include at least a few of the following

local specialties: Beggar's chicken (an entire chicken cooked in a ball of mud), West

Lake fish (vinegar coated fish from the lake) and braised pork and stewed shelled

shrimp cooked in Longjing tea.
There are some good restaurants in Hangzhou serving up this cuisine in nice settings

and with style. Perhaps the best place is the Louwailou restaurant on Solitary Island, but

there are other places dotted around. Late at night (ie. after 10pm) the area around

Hangzhou's Fish Market really comes to life.
This market is tucked just behind the lake on Yan'an Lu. It is a fun area and bursting with

life. The fish is thrown out of the nets in front of the restaurants round here and diners

can hand pick what they want to eat! It is very fresh and usually tasty and there is a

really local and lively atmosphere about this place. Don't worry if you don't speak

Chinese- just point instead! Also worth checking out are the Buffets that many of

the larger hotels do. The one in The Shangri- La is particularly good.

West Lake Carp in Sweet and Sour Sauce
Also known as Shusao Chuangzhen in Chinese, it is a must-taste traditional Hangzhou dish.

Dongpo Pork
The pork is stewed along with vinegar, scallion, ginger, and sugar, in a sealed casserole

pot over a low heat. It's as soft as tofu but not fragile, glutinous but not greasy.

Beggar's Chicken
It is also called Hangzhou Weiji (Weiji means roasted chicken in Chinese). It’s one of

36 Hangzhou Famous Dishes authorized by Zhejiang Province in 1956.

Sister Song’s Fish Broth
The world-famous traditional Hangzhou cuisine, Sister Song’s Fish Broth tastes as

good as crab meat, and is lustrous in color, and creamy in taste.

Attractions
The West Lake

杭州西湖2.jpg

Beautiful and romantic spot since ancient times, this UNESCO World Heritage Site,

is surrounded by mountains on three sides and divided into the North Inner Lake, the

Yuehu Lake, the West Inner Lake, the South Lake, and the West Outer Lake by the Bai

Causeway, the Su Causeway, and the Yang Causeway. The Solitary Hill between the

North Inner Lake and the West Outer Lake is the largest natural island. In addition,

there are three man-made islands in the West Outer Lake: the Lesser Paradise Island,

the Mid-lake Pavilion, and the Ruangong Islet; and two famous pagodas by the lake:

the Leifeng Pagoda to the south and the Baochu Pagoda to the north. Nowadays,

West Lake is one of the top ten scenic areas in China.
Jingci Temple
This temple is located at the foot of Huiri Peak of Nanping Hill, south of West Lake..

It is the second prominent Buddhist temple beside West Lake in Hangzhou, China.

Together with Lingyin Temple, it is called the jewel of the southern and northern hills.

Lingyin Temple (Soul's Retreat)
Lingyin Temple is located about 2 km (1.2 mi) west of West Lake. This is believed

to be the oldest Buddhist temple in the city, which has gone through numerous

destruction and reconstruction cycles. You will find Temple of Soul's Retreat (Lingyin

Temple) in a long, narrow valley between Peak Flown From Afar (Fei Lai Feng) and

North Peak to the northwest of the West Lake at Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province. It

is without doubt a premier showpiece in the West Lake environs and is notable also

as one of the ten most famous Buddhist temples of China. In 1961 it was listed for

protection as a key provincial historical and cultural site and is considered a leading

centre for research relative to Chinese Buddhist culture.
Baochu Pagoda
Located on Precious Stone Hill to the north of West Lake, the Baochu Pagoda is

also known as the "Baoshu", "Baosuo", or the "Precious Stone Pagoda". It mirrors the

Leifeng Pagoda to the south of the lake from a distance. The Baochu Pagoda is often

compared to a slim beauty, while the Leifeng Pagoda is an old monk. They are

landmarks and famous tourist attractions of West Lake. In addition, Precious Stone

Hill Floating in Rosy Clouds has been listed as one of the top scenes of West Lake.

Tourists can have a panoramic view of the tower and the whole West Lake when

standing on the top of the hill.

Yue-Wang Temple (King Yue's Temple) or Yue Fei Miao
Song Dynasty in 1221 to commemorate Yue Fei. The site includes Yue Fei's Temple,

Loyalty Temple and Yue Fei’s Mausoleum inside. The temple was reconstructed several

times in later date. The tombs and the tomb sculptures in the temple all dates from the

12th century, and have been meticulously restored.

Leifeng Pagoda
The Leifeng Pagoda stands on Leifeng Peak of Sunset Hill to the south ofWest Lake,

echoing the Baochu Pagoda in the north. It is the oldest colorful bronze pagoda in China.

Standing on the top of the pagoda, tourists can appreciate the nearby Jingci Temple,

enjoy the landscapes of West Lake, and even see the city of Hangzhou from a distance.

At dusk, the colorful evening glow and green mountains are mirrored in the rippling

lake, forming a picturesque scene renowned as "Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow",

one of the top ten scenes of West Lake.

Expat community
China has always had an allure for foreigners with many falling in love with the

sheer vibrancy of the place – from work to domestic life, from culture to entertainment

and travel. Government figures show the number of expatriates living in Shanghai has

risen by 70 per cent in the past decade, from 100,000 in 2005 to nearly 170,000 last year.

Expatriates are mostly drawn by lucrative job offers; they come, mostly, to make money:

for postings at multinational companies with Asian headquarters in Shanghai; for jobs

they cannot get back home, where economies are struggling; to follow their executive

husbands or wives; or to teach or study. For in Shanghai there is never a dull moment:

blink and the city transforms itself.
