| 1.General introduction Location & Climate  Yinchuan is the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and former capital of the Western Xia Empire of the Tanguts. It has an area of 4,467 km (2,776 miles) and a total population of 1.99 million. Its built up area is home to 1,290,170 inha-bitants spread on 3 urban districts. The name of the city literally means "silver river". Thanks to the Yellow River, Yinchuan enjoys beautiful natural sceneries and fa- vorable conditions for agriculture and has long earned the fame of a "River Side City in the Northwest" and "Home to Fishes and Rice". Yinchuan is now the per- manent site for China-Arab Expo which is an international platform for cultural and economic exchanges between China and Arab countries. Yinchuan is a multi-nationality city including Han, Hui, Manchu, Mongolian, and Chaoxian peoples. Among them, the Hui people account for 26.3 percent of the total population and they have maintained the traditional folk customs and life style that are unique to other ethnic group. Yinchuan has a temperate continental climate,lacking in rainfall but with plenty of sunshine.The notable climate feature is windy, dry and sandy, which requires travelers to drink lots of water, It is exposed to the most solar radiation and sunshine in the whole country, so you had better take your sun-block, sunglasses and hat, As the city is close to the Yellow River, there are good sources of canal water. The average annual temperature is about 9°C(about 48F).The temperature difference between day and night is quite large,nearly about 15°C(59F),so warm clothes are indispensable in this city.The spring is warm and the summer is short here.Late sp-ring and early summer is a golden time for traveling, and the Flower Festival (May to June) is also held during this time. The rainy days mainly occur during june and September.  PopulationThe urban area of Yinchuan is 107 square Kilometers with a population of 1.285 million(2010),Among the city's permanent residents, there are 1,031.754 males and 961,334 females, accounting for 51.77% and 48.23% of the total population respe-cvtively. About 56 ethnic minority groups live in the city inclding Hui,Han,MongolmManchu and Chaoxian. The Hui population is around 0.46 million, which accou -tion for nearly a quarter of the inhabitants.  Ecomomy & IndustryThe city's gross domestic product per capita was ¥31,436 (US$4,526) in 2008, rank- ing 197th of 659 Chinese cities. Its main industries are the production of Chinese wolfberry, wheat, apple, rice, and wine.[citation needed] In 2010, Yinchuan is offi- cially assignment as the site for China-Arab States Cooperation Forum. It provides great opportunities for Yinchuan to develop as the business center for China and Arab States. In the national level, Yinchuan has been holding various events such as China-Arab States Expo, to function as a business bridge between China and Arab States.  2.Transportation BusThe newly-built Bus station is located at the Qinghe South Street,Xingqing District,near the longpan Furniture Building bus station.It is about 4 Kilometers away from the original Gate bus station.To get to the west gate of the newly-built bus station,passengers can take the cuty bus line 37,38,102 and 302 and get off at the Victory street station. In addition,passengers can also take the city bus line 1,3,12 and 23 and get off at the Yingbin Square bus station. To reach the east gate of the newly-built bus station,passengers can take the city bus line19 and 101 and get off at the Qinghe Street bus station.  RailBaotou–Lanzhou Railway runs through Yinchuan,which links Beijing–Baotou Rail- way,Lanzhou–Xinjiang Railway,Lanzhou–Qinghai Railway and Lanzhou–Lianyunguang Railway.There are direct trains fromYinchun Railway Station to Beijing,Lanzhu, Hohhot, Baotou, Datong,Zhangjiakou and Qingtouxia. Yinchuan Railway Station is located at 710,Shanghai West Road, Xixia District, and bus 1 and 3 will take you there fromYinchuan city center.  Air Yinchuan Hedong Airport has more than 40 domestic flights to over 10 major ci- ties each week, including Beijing, Guang-zhou, Shanghai, Xi’an, Hong Kong, Nan jing, Chengwu, Wuhan, Kunming, Taiyuan, Urumqi, Jinan, Hanghzou, Zheng-zhou, Qingdao and Dunhuang. International flights to Dubai, Seoul and Bangkok are available in the airport. In addition, the airport shuttle buses are available between Hedong Airport and Yichuan Aviation Mansion, and it costs about 30 RMB from the airport to Yichuan city center by taxi. 3. Education & Health care  SchoolsFairmont’s Joint Diploma Program is the first international program to be offered at the high school level. The American teachers and leaders of this program are EDUCATION some of the first Caucasians that Yinchuan students and faculty me-mbers have met. Yinchuan No. 2 High School educates over 3,000 high school students, the majority coming from Yinchuan, with a select few coming from smaller towns within the autonomous region. The JDP is a balance of Chinese and American curriculum and teaching methodol-ogies. Students take traditional Chi-nese high school courses, as well as Advanced Placement and comprehensive Eng-lish courses which introduce students to west-ern teaching, critical thinking, labo- ratory work, class participation and the like. This is a bilingual program.  HospitalsNingxia People's hospital and General Hospitalof Ningxia Medical University,both are comprehensive hospital with complete clinical specialities and advanced equi- pments with departments of Cardiovascular medicine & Surgery, Neurological Medicine & Surgery,Tumor Medicine & Surgery, Burns' Hesling, X-ray, Radiothhe- rapy,etc. The hospital owns a number of advance domestic and foreign sophistica-ted equipments.However, there is no foreign doctor in this hospital, we suggest a translator shall go with the expats when expats need to go to hospital.Both hospi-tal are open 24h and 7days a week. They also offer an emergency service. Below is some information for your reference. 4.Recreation Shopping  Here one can not only buy unique local products or souvenirs but also enjoy shop-ping in such an interesting place. Yinchuan will provide you with many special ag- ricultural products and tourist craftworks. Xinhua Depart-ment Store located inXinhua Dongjie is the biggest shopping center in Yinchuan which provides you a variety of commodities and you can buy local products such as flannelette blank- ets and Helan stone carvings here. Cultural Relic Main Store  If you enjoy Coffee just as we do and you like to drink it in a peaceful place with- out a billion of people like in the Starbucks shops then you should go to “The Little Coffee.” Situated next to the Forest Park, you can enjoy homemade coffee specialties e.g. Sea Salt Cheese Coffee, Cafe Tiramisu, Cappucino and many more.But what makes this place so special? Unfortunately many places in China are not as clean as you wish them to be. This place is different, it is clean, the owner is very friendly and the interior is a mix of clean modern and art-deco. The Little Co- ffee offers not only delicious coffee but also Cookies, Cake and Pizza. So if you are looking for a nice cozy place to enjoy a coffee while working on your computer or taking a breath after your shopping tour at the nearby mall, then take a look into this special little Cafe in Yinchuan. You won't regret it. Nightlife When you enter the ‘Brauhaus’ you will be warmly welcomed by the spacious hall and the servers who are dressed in traditional bavarian style clothes called' dirndl’. By now you probably feel a little bit like you just left China and entered the Munich Octoberfest in Germany. But no, you are still in Yinchuan. Check the menu card for your favorite German meal if you are hungry or skip directly to the beer. From german black beer to their self-brewed beer they have everything you could possibly want. If you want to keep it real german than take a maß which is 1l of beer together with a ‘Schnitzel’ (fried piece of meat).  CuisineJust when I thought I’ve seen it all.. It was a normal day, I was checking the in- ternet for any news about Yinchuan or Ningxia when I came across the website of Real Food RN by Kate. I stumbled across her article about what she calls NingXia Gummies. First, I was thinking Gummies & NingXia? Weird combination but I im-mediately started to know what she was talking about when I saw her pictures. Gosh, this awesome person mixed the well-known (in America) NingXia red, which is a goji berry juice created by the CEO of Young Living Founder D. Gary Young. You could call it a “super drink” which is believed to have several positive health benefits. Ingredients are Ningxia wolfberry puree, blueberry juice, plum juice, che- rry juice and much more. Basically, it is a fruit bomb. So is it a healthy drink that gives you super power? AttractionWith the Yellow River in the east and the Helan Mountain to the west of Yinchuan, the city is long known as a pearl in the north. The capital city of Ningxia has a long history and therefore a lot of attractions and places for sightseeing to offer. For example, you could take a trip to the China Hui Culture Park or the Zhenbeipu Studios. Yinchuan’s diverse beauty and numerous historical sights make it a pla- ce you shouldn’t miss out when you travel to China.  The China Hui Culture Park (中华回乡文化园) is the only theme park in China that displays ethnic Hui culture, traditions, and religion. As a visitor, you can spot Hui religion, dances & songs, folk culture, exhibitions about the history of the Hui people and of course, some Hui food in the park.Hui culture is a mix of Islamic and traditional Chinese culture from the Tang and Han Dynasty. Most of the Hui people live in Ningxia, about 20% of the Hui people. Famous Hui people are among others, Zheng He (important Chinese explorer, ad-miral, and diplomat) and Ma Bufang (General and prominent Muslim).  Western Xia Tombs – 西夏王陵The Western Xia tombs (often called Chinese Pyramid's) is a term that either scares us or attracts us. While many people try to stir clear from burial sites, it is, undeniably, a historical footprint. In China, where history dates back thousands of years, and it is a contribution to the human civilization can not ever be described in words, there are places like the Western Xia Tombs in Yinchuan that are less well known, however, not least fascinating. If you are planning to visit China or the Ningxia area in search for Yinchuan Attractions, the West Xia Imperial Tombs must catch your attention and make it to the top list of things to see when you are there. Sp-read across an area of more than 50 kilometers (19.3 square miles), it is an unpar- lleled entombment place among all other royal burials. These tombs portray relics of an inner square, roads, courtyards, wells and houses. While the idea of visiting a cemetery may scare off some of the western travelers, I can assure you that this place has nothing to do with a classical cemetery, as you know it. The Western Xia dynasty, which is often also referred to as “Tangut Empire”, existed between the year 1038 and 1227, when it was conquered by the Mongols under Genghis Khan.  The Haibao Pagoda (海宝塔) is located in the north of Yinchuan (银川) and is literal-ly meaning (Haibao = Sea Treasure and Pagoda = Tower) Sea Treasure Tower. Many legends and unproofed sources tell that the North Tower was eventually re-built in the 5th century while it’s not known when the Pagoda was originally constructed. What’s known is that the tower collapsed several times causing earth- quakes but was always been restored. Last time the Pagoda was restored in 1788 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).It is also said that there was a lake and the Pagoda was situated on an island. The locals from Yinchuan (银川) would take a boat to cross the lake on the 4th march of every lunar new year to attend the temple fair. The temple has several names such as North Pagoda, Haibao Pagoda, North Tower, Black Tower or Haibao Bud-dha Hall. On the top of the 53 Meters tall Tower, you will have an incredible view over Yinchuan and maybe the chance to see a Buddhist while climbing up the 11 floors. Zhenbeipu Studios/ Western China Film Studios – “the Hollywood of China” – 镇北堡西部影城 A must see if you visit Yinchuan, is the Zhenbeipu Western Film Studio or Western China Film Studio which is one of the main attractions in Ningxia with a rating of 5 out of 5 Chinese Stars.It is one of the three biggest film studios in China and the most famous in the western part of the People’s Republic. The Zhenbeipu Studio was build on a former fortress which was destroyed by a massive earthquake. Sin-ce 1992, more than 80 movies were filmed in the Western China Film Studios whi-ch was set up by the famous Chinese writer Zhang Xianling. |
