1. General introduction

Wuxi is a city richly endowed by nature. Owing to its pleasantly warm and moist climate,

it boasts a reputation of the 'Land of Fish and Rice'. Relying on the near-by Yangtze

River and ancient Grand Canal, it had been a port city with the busiest rice and cloth

market in China before 19th century. In modern times, with its rapidly developing

industry, Wuxi became one of China's top 50 cities with broad strength and is thus

called the 'Little Shanghai' for its prosperous economy. With a splendid history of over

three thousand years, Wuxi claims to be 'the Pearl of Tai Lake'. Early in the Spring and

Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC), it had been the economic and politic center south of

Yangtze River.

As a pearl of Taihu Lake, Wuxi is not only famous for its natural scenery and man-made

landscapes, but it’s also famous for its wonderful festivals.

In addition, a number of festivals are also highlights of traveling to Wuxi, represented

by the Taibo Temple Fair (heldat Meicun Town from February 4 to February 6), Wuxi

International Plum Culture Festival (held at Meiyuan Garden in March), Wuxi Peach

Blossom Festival (held at Yangshan from March to April), the Porcelain Art Festival

(at Yixing in May)and Taihu Lake Tourism Festival (at Taihu Lake area from September

to October), during which you can purchase authentic Wuxi souvenirs and specialties,

such as dark-red enameled potteries and clay figures.

Location & population

Wuxi is an old city in southern Jiangsu province, on China’s East coast. Split in half

by Lake Tai, Wuxi borders Changzhou to the west and Suzhou to the east. The

Yangtze River lies between the northern half of Wuxi and Taizhou, while the southern

half of the city borders the province of Zhejiang. Nestled on the northern shore of

Tai Lake, China's third-largest body of fresh water, Wuxi lies on the southern border

of the province, about 128 kilometers (79.5 miles) northwest of Shanghai.

Covering an area of 4,785 square kilometers (1847.5 square miles), it borders Suzhou

to the east, Zhejiang Province to the south and Changzhou to the west. There are six

districts and two county-level cities (Jiangyin and Yixing) under its prefecture. According

to the 2010 Census, the prefecture-level of Wuxi has a population of 6,372,624, an

increase of 1,192,777 from the 2000 census, giving it an annual population growth

season to pay a visit. In this refreshing season, your palate would be revitalized by the

delicious fresh water Wuxi products in Taihu Lake as well as the juicy fruits of the area.

Though the weather is changeable, spring is also a great season to visit for it is the

time when various flowers are blooming. In the bite of cold winter, many temple fairs

full of the local characters will make this city very lively. It is not suitable to go to Wuxi

in summer since it is hot and rainy in this season and the temperature would beyond

36C (96.8F) at this time.

Economy & industry

Currently Wuxi is designated as an investment grade city, and has two large industrial

parks devoted to new industries. While being the current manufacturing centers on

textiles, there are projects to move to electric motor manufacturing and MRP software

development. Wuxi is the solar technology hub in China as two major photovoltaic

companies are based in the city, namely Suntech Power and Jetion Holdings Ltd which

were listed on overseas stock exchanges.

In 2008 new energy industries were worth 37.8 Billion RMB, with the solar photovoltaic

industry accounting for 30.2 Billion RMB of the total. The GDP per capita was ¥107,400

Delta with Taihu Lake to the south, Yangtze River to the north, Suzhou to the east and

Changzhou to the west, through which the Beijing-Hanghzou Grand Canal runs, and it

two subways were put into operation within a year.

The north-south Line 1 and east-west Line 2 are 56.11 kilometers in length, with a

total of 43 stations covering seven districts in the city.

According to the Wuxi urban rail traffic plan, Wuxi urban high-speed rail traffic will

regard the main urban districts as the core and form a radioactive and circular

network by three main lines and two subordinate lines by 2050.

Metro line 1, 2 and 3 are bone lines, showing a radial pattern and line 4 and 5 lines

are subordinate lines. The network is planned to be 157.77 km long with 111 stations.

The concept of energy saving and environmental protection will be integrated into

routine construction, station design and technical materials.

Markets

In the downtown area, Zhongshan Road is the busiest commercial street of Wuxi,

with many shopping centers and markets selling local specialties.

Nightlife

Wuxi is not exactly known as a nightlife capital which makes finding a good bar

all the more challenging. But with alcohol revenues in China growing at a yearly

average of 27.2 % and bar culture creeping into more Chinese cities than you can

keep track, you can be sure to find a suitable place to guzzle your worries away.

Here are five of the most popular expat bars in Wuxi:

Red Lion

A relatively new bar in the Wuxi nightlife scene, the owner of this bar is an Australian

expat (who used to own Blue Bar) and the chef at the helm in the kitchen was a former

chef at the Indonesia Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. Red Lion – with its sold selection of

food, cocktails and beers – has quickly turned into one of the most popular expat

hangouts in Wuxi. The bar hosts regular events from live bands to comedy acts to

open mic nights (on Tuesdays).

Founded in 1999 in Suzhou, Blue Marlin has branched out with a whopping ten bars

in the Zhejiang/Jiangxi area. Part of the bar’s success has been in providing a “home

away from home” atmosphere complete with authentic Western dishes and a solid

selection of imported beers. The bar’s specialty is their hand shaken cocktails and

long frozen drinks; to enjoy these without breaking the bank head there on a Tuesday

when it’s buy-one-get-one free on all cocktails. With monthly themed parties, live

bands, drink deals and other events, Blue Marlin looks set to stay.
